PRIME Series Creative Tips & Tricks: Roll FX w/ Joe Brunning

We occasionally like to bring you some PRIME Series quick hints, tips and tricks content here on the Denon DJ Blog – here’s a couple of cool performance videos to inspire experimentation and fun with the X1800 mixer’s ‘Roll’ FX feature. DJ/Artist and former DMC Champion Joe Brunning sent us a couple of example ideas on how he had adapted the Roll FX to be a Loop/Sampler of sorts, to integrate into his performance. Joe came down to our studios to record the following two examples of his own creative vision and, so you can perhaps recreate or add your own ‘spin’ to this method, you can follow each step he performs right through the timeline – enjoy!
Video #1: Welcome to the Jungle
In the above video #1 example, Joe records his own vocal sample live, by routing the Mic channel to the FX assign source. This then loops right through the mix as Joe manipulates filters and adds other elements into the mix, such as hot-cue juggling plus changing the ‘X1800’s ‘time-division’ touchstrip to change the vocal loop length.
Video #2: Hot-Cue Bass Loop
In video #2, Joe uses the same ‘capture’ method to feed audio into the X1800’s Roll FX, but this time he uses an SC5000 audio channel as input source. By playing live, a 2 bar (8-beat) bass note sequence, triggered by pre-assigned hot-cue points for each note, Joe creates his own melody which is then looped through the performance. Check out too how Joe flips between the dual-layer capability of his SC5000’s, and additional hot-cue juggling, to add and manipulate even more creative sonic elements.
Thanks and big up to Joe Brunning for these great PRIME Series ‘Creative Tips & Tricks’ performances. You can follow Joe Brunning via his Socials below.
